Welcome to
the Website of Carl Painter
Painter by name, Artist
by nature!
Traditionally, in the past, a portrait artist would require a subject to
sit and pose for hours at a time. Fortunately, since the invention of
the camera, it is possible to 'freeze' the pose, enabling the portrait
artist to work on the painting without the subject enduring hours or
even days, of maintaining an uncomfortable position.
You may think your photos are not good enough for a portrait. However, before you
rush off to a photographer to get the right shot, I suggest you look
through your photos again, and remember, a portrait is not a photograph.
When making your choice, don't pay too much attention to things like
lighting or red-eye, etc., these can be adjusted. If the photo has
red-eye, it pays to supply an extra photo or two that best show the eye
colour or any other particular feature that I might not pickup clearly
in the main photo, (i.e. scars, birthmarks, etc.).
Many people are uncomfortable about their freckles, and choose not to
have the portrait artist paint them. Therefore, I paint the portrait 'freckle
free' unless I am requested to paint them in.
Never be concerned about the background, like any portrait artist, I can
alter or change this completely. The portrait in my gallery entitled
'Oceans of love'
is an example of this. The original photo was taken in the couple's
backyard and the beach scene added to the painting, replacing the wooden fence.
Likewise, the portrait of
'Jonathan'
was from a photo taken in his living room, while he was opening his Christmas presents.
If you cannot find a photo you like in your album, take one yourself,
you do not need to be a professional photographer. Maybe you have a
friend or relative who you think takes good photos. If you do choose to
take one, try to ensure good lighting on the face. Try not to use a
flash, use the sun instead. Remember the background is not important.
